Moss & Lichen Removal from Graves and Headstones

Algae is the thin green or black film that makes a stone look dirty and slippery. Moss is the soft, spongy cushion that settles into lettering channels and shaded corners. Lichen is the flat grey, white, yellow or orange crust that bonds tightly to the surface — the slowest to grow and the hardest to remove safely. All three thrive on damp, shaded memorials.

Lichen grips so firmly that scraping or wire-brushing it off lifts the surface with it and softens the lettering. Instead we apply a pH-neutral, stone-safe biological treatment, brush it in very gently, and let it break the lichen down over the following weeks. It is a patient process, but it is the only method that protects the memorial.

Because the damage is often invisible on the day and permanent. Wire brushes and pressure washers tear the surface, blast out lettering and gilding, and drive water and salts into the stone, which leads to worse staining and flaking later. Bleach, acid and weed-killer are just as harmful. Gentle biological treatment is slower, but safe.

The treatment is applied in a single visit, but the growth keeps lifting for several weeks afterwards as it works. Light algae often clears quickly; thick moss and well-established lichen can need a second visit. We will tell you honestly at the quote stage whether one treatment is likely to be enough.

On a damp, shaded memorial, growth will always try to return. But a proper treatment breaks down the whole organism rather than just wiping the surface, so it takes far longer to reappear. Keeping leaves and debris cleared helps, and many families choose a light annual or quarterly visit to keep growth from taking hold again.

Not always. On very old or historically significant memorials, some lichens are slow-growing, harmless and even valued, and stripping them can do more harm than good.
