Remembrance Sunday and why it matters

Remembrance Sunday, observed on the second Sunday of November, is the nation’s solemn moment to honour those who gave their lives in service. Across London, families gather at memorials, churches and cemeteries to lay wreaths and observe the two-minute silence. For many, a quiet visit to a loved one’s grave is the most personal act of remembrance of all.

Yet not everyone can be there in person. Family may live far away, or age and infirmity may make the journey difficult. A veteran’s memorial that has weathered a year of London rain, moss and grime can look neglected at the very moment it should look its most dignified. In the weeks before Remembrance Sunday, our team tends to a veteran’s private grave with the care it deserves:

Gentle cleaning of the headstone and memorial, using methods appropriate to the stone so the surface is never damaged.
Tidying the plot — clearing leaves, weeds and debris, trimming back overgrowth and neatening the surround.
Laying a poppy wreath or cross on your behalf, positioned with care, so the grave is dressed for the day even if you cannot attend.
Photographs sent to you afterwards, so family near and far can see the memorial honoured and at peace.

Private graves vs CWGC war graves

It is important to draw a clear distinction. A veteran’s private family grave — one your family owns and is responsible for — can be cared for like any other memorial, and we are glad to help with that.

Official Commonwealth war graves, however, are different. These are the distinctive uniform Portland stone headstones marking service personnel who died in or as a result of the two World Wars. They are maintained to an exacting standard by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and should never be cleaned, painted or altered by members of the public. If you notice an official war grave that needs attention, the right step is to report your concern directly to the Commission, who care for these memorials in perpetuity. Restoring regimental lettering and badges

Many veterans’ private memorials carry service inscriptions — a regiment, a rank, dates of service, or a carved regimental badge or crest. Over the decades, painted or gilded lettering fades, flakes and becomes hard to read.

Where the stone allows, we can carefully re-paint or re-gild faded service inscriptions and detailing, restoring the words and emblems that record a life of duty. Book ahead for early November

Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day fall within a short window in early-to-mid November, and it is by far our busiest season for veterans’ memorials. To be certain a grave is cleaned, dressed and ready in good time, we recommend booking in October. Early booking also gives us room to complete any lettering restoration, which can take a little longer.

Organisations such as the Royal British Legion do tremendous work supporting remembrance across the country; our role is simply the practical one of preparing the memorial itself.
